Go Interns Go!

Hello Everyone,

GHS:  There will be a rally on June 1 (it was scheduled for 5/25).  We will be in class that day, so no worries about site, internship is over.

AP, IB and CAASPP Testing - any testing schedules that affect site attendance?  Contact me regarding any and all absences from P2/P3 for the AM class, and for the PM - please text me as well with details.

NEED CC HOURS?  Want to join the Over 200 Club?

I always have projects. I will award double time CC hours for any of you that want to come in at lunch by appointment (GHS or LHS) to help with classroom inventory, organizing some medical supplies, creating a few file boxes and making the classroom ready for 18/19! For the rest of you, feel free to make arrangements to be here on a Wednesday after class.

Try the app called Insight Timer for meditation. (It has a golden bowl on the app) A lot of you may not believe in meditation, but I double-dare you to try so you gain perspective and peace. Please, this is not the time to weaken.  Get good sleep, plan your day/week/month so you feel good about each day and what to do.  How about nice, deep breaths?  Remember?

Phones in class? Whaaaaat???  What changed? A few of you really need to step up and be the strong folks I know you are. For those of you that are losing altitude due to attitude, please be mindful about keeping phones in your backpacks, do not disrupt class and smile, it looks good on you!

For those of you heading out of state and want to take the AAMA Certification Exam:

18 19 Orientation....Done!

Hello All,

I am so happy about the support from all that helped at the orientation!

Thank you volunteers/speakers - you did a fabulous job last night.  We had quite a turnout and I must say, I appreciate your calmness while I was running around "coordinating".  Thanks again!  Add 3 hours of CC time to your time sheet for 4/25!

Reminders for 5/2:  RSVP's for 5/29 - confirm any changes.

SO SORRY, we have been turned down regarding our order for graduation honor cords.  It's out of our control. Ms. Beyne and I are very disappointed. We had no idea there were so many hoops and approvals that have to take place. We will though have pins, etc. for you at the graduation.  Alex, I will refund your $5.  :-(

Book return - Your MT book of course and any other....veterinary, EMR or nursing books.  Thanks!!!

Urgent Site reminder:  As we wind down, please let me contact your site about last day of internship, graduation information, etc.

Also, please.......no more hair hanging down (put hair back in ponytail!) or other violations regarding infection control. I am seeing a big decline this week at sites. It does not matter what others do, represent this program well as you have all year. Let's finish strong and looking good!!!

Money-Saving Tips for Moving Out at 18

Here are a few basic ways to cut back on expenses during your first years of independence.

1. Don Your Chef’s Hat

Cooking your own meals on a daily basis can save you more money than just about any other change in your behavior. Knowing how to make five basic meals (say, chili, tacos, chicken and vegetables, spaghetti with marinara sauce, and a slow-cooked roast with veggies), and having a microwave handy for reheating leftovers, can cut your food expenses in half. An added bonus: Homemade food is almost always healthier than prepared meals.

2. Kill Some Kilowatt Hours

Get into the habit of turning off—or even unplugging—lights, appliances and electronics when you aren’t using them. And consider getting a programmable thermostat to keep heating and cooling costs down.

3. Quit Using Credit

Only carry one credit card, and commit to only using it in absolute emergencies. Using cash or a debit card for day-to-day expenses prevents you from overspending and accruing budget-busting interest charges.

4. Explore Other Avenues

Consider all your transportation options. Do you really need to drive everywhere, particularly if you have to pay for parking once you get there? And with Uber, Lyft, Car2Go and other ride-sharing services now widely available, city dwellers might even consider ditching their cars completely. The cheapest gallon of gas is the one you don’t use.

Things to Include in Your First Budget

Show Mom and Dad you know how to move out the smart way by creating a monthly budget and sticking to it. Here are some items you’ll probably want to include.
  • Rent: most likely your largest single expense
  • Utilities: electricity, gas, water, cable TV, internet, etc.
  • Meals: supermarkets, restaurants, drive-thrus and delivery
  • Transportation: flights, cab rides, fuel, auto insurance, vehicle registration, etc.
  • Medical: prescription drugs, co-pays, etc.
  • Entertainment: date nights, impromptu adventures, vacations
  • Clothing and toiletries: new threads, soaps, shampoos, shaving cream, etc.
  • Subscriptions and memberships: gym, magazines, online movie or music services
  • Gifts: birthdays, weddings, baby showers and holidays
  • Pet Care: annual checkups, flea medicine

You Need a Financial Cushion

A good rule of thumb you might’ve heard is, in the event of an emergency, everyone should have a financial cushion substantial enough to cover three- to six-months of living expenses. And while there’s no arguing the soundness of that advice, many people think that’s simply not possible and they don’t even bother trying.
But even if you don’t have half a year’s salary chilling in your bank account, having some money set aside is better than none. There are countless ways to work toward building an emergency savings account, from setting aside loose change at the end of every day and depositing it in the bank at the end of the month, to having a percentage of your paycheck automatically stashed away in your savings account. Many first-timers use the simple 50/20/30 rule of budgeting to ensure a balanced bank account. Start now, and even if you only save a few dollars a week, it will add up over time, and help you avoid financial hardship later on.
Learning how to make a budget isn’t the most exciting thing you’ll do when first moving out and living on your own, but it can mean the difference between just getting by and making the most of your money.

Fair Warning:

For those of you that are above and beyond the minimum number of community classroom (CC) hours, continue site attendance as scheduled.  Any change in schedule or absences must be reported to me. Many of you have or will be over 200!!!  That earns you a special certificate of achievement!

About 25 of you are looking like you will be very close, but may not make the 180. Check your hours log and I'll review your hours next time you are in the classroom with me

Take advantage of any and all CC hour opportunities from this point forward.  We're in the home stretch and the week of 5/21 has a special schedule.  I'll cover that next week.  Thank you very much.

If you are volunteering at the 4/25 orientation or attending the College Planning Night on 4/26, you
will earn CC HOURS.  You'll have to bring business cards, etc. (evidence of your participation 4/26)

FREE YOUTH HEART SCREENING EVENT - Volunteer for CC Hours!
Hosted by Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District

INVITED:        All students 12 to 25 years old in the Livermore Valley and surrounding area are invited to participate in Via Heart Project’s heart screening event.

WHEN:            Sunday, April 22, 2018, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

WHERE:          Livermore High School, 600 Maple St, Livermore, CA 94550, USA

WHY:              It is estimated 1 in 500 school-aged children suffer an undiagnosed heart defect, which can lead to sudden cardiac arrest and death. A typical annual physical does not screen for advanced heart abnormalities. This screening does not take the place of your annual or pre-participation sports physical.

WHAT:            Screenings take 60-90 minutes (wait times may vary) and consist of:

©                  Vitals
©                  CPR/AED Training
©                  Health History Review
©                  12-lead EKG
©                  Cardiologist Consult
©                  Limited Echo

The entire process is non-invasive—no needles or x-ray exposure—and we ensure each teen’s confidentiality, privacy and individual modesty is respected throughout all aspects of the screening.

HOW:             Registration will open Monday March 12, 2018 and will close at noon on Friday April 20, 2018. Register at https://viaheartproject.org/screenings/ Hurry! Space is limited to the first 750 registrants!

COST:              Via Heart Project is able to provide heart screening free of charge thanks to our volunteer cardiologists, sonographers, nurses, and our generous sponsors

Job-seekers interested in seasonal work at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton can attend the Summer Job Fair on Saturday, April 28. The event runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the fairgrounds' Yellow Gate entrance at 4501 Pleasanton Ave. in Pleasanton. Representatives from the fair, Spectra and Venue Smart, the fair's on-site food-beverage and custodial partners, will be on hand to provide information, accept applications and interview potential candidates, fairgrounds officials said. Most positions start mid-June and run through the second week of July. Students, "first job" applicants, retirees and all others interested in short-term employment can attend. Candidates must be age 16 or older to apply. Parking will be available on Pleasanton Avenue and the ACE Train lot located across from the Yellow Gate. For more information, visit alamedacountyfair.com.
That's enough!  Whew!
