Important Assignment!

Hello Interns,

For this weekend...your "homework", is to prepare a card/envelope for your site that wishes them a happy holiday season. Write some words of appreciation and how privileged we are to have been accommodated at the site.

I have some candy canes to hand out for them as well as some chocolates if you need them.

I am fine with you taking some cookies or candy in on your own as well.

Let's do a GREAT JOB in showing them how much we appreciate their support of the ROP Program!

Have a great weekend and by the way, you don't have to wait, you can take your card, etc. in on Monday or Tuesday.  On Wednesday, I'll have something you can take in to them, but make sure you have a card for the supervisor and the staff.

Happy Friday,

Ms. Erceg

Ethical Behavior in the Workplace

Hello Interns,

You have probably noticed that I put a lot of emphasis on internship expectations. I believe with all of my heart that discussions about workplace behavior, group dynamics, collaboration, responding vesus reacting, etc. will serve you well for the rest of your life.  Not only will these discussions help you with where you work, but in your personal life too.  You know what?  Your stories from the field/journal entries are so important for you, but helps the Med Occs program as well. Thank you in advance for writing meaningful, thorough journal entries.

Please follow the criteria set for your journal.  (See last night's blog for that).

Take care and keep up the good work!!!

Ms. Erceg

Greetings Interns! Read on....

Hello Everyone,

Nice discussion on bio-ethics today.  More to come.

Here is a list of reminders.  Please be sure to read this list thoroughly and follow directions accordingly!

1. Think of and arrange for a nice card, candy or something to bring to site for the holidays. A card is fine...just write a nice note thanking them!

2. LHS MORNING STUDENTS- Go to the Career Center on 12/21 for P2 and P3. Ms. Cabading will have an assigment from me for you to do.  INFORM your site that you won't be coming that day, there is not enough time for you to get there and get back in time for P4.  PM LHS: Make arrangements at site that coincides with your school schedule. You should do just fine in the PM.

GHS 12/21:  See me if you feel there will be any conflict in being able to attend site that day.

AVHS: 12/20 - In Med Occs at 1:45.  12/21 - Site/normal time  12/22 - See me 12/20

DHS: Check with your site re: 12/19 and 12/22.

3. Eating food at site: If they offer treats, food, etc., pack it up and take it with you after your shift. If the gathering is away from patient areas, it's okay to partake in holiday festivities at your site as long as patient care is not jeopardized.

4. TRACK your absences from site in the notes column of your hours log in your CC binder.

5. If you need to email me:  Email me at lerceg@lvjusd.k12.ca.us

6. A lot of you are not adhering to the journal entry criteria.  Try bullet points, but be thorough!
  • Intention:
  • Details of the Day
  • Communication - Positive/Negative
  • Relevance to ROP training
7. Keep that hair in a hair DO, not a hair DON'T....look professional at all times.  We have a reputation to uphold! ...and don't forget your badge!

8. Missing assignments?....meet me in the classroom or text me at lunch TOMORROW to get it straightened out!

9. HW for 12/20:  Bring a completed, edited resume.  As a parent for help.  Here's a site:
https://www.thebalance.com/first-resume-example-with-no-work-experience-2063278

10. Thank you for being the best you can be out there - go interns go!!!

Happy Monday! Week 3 Here We Are

Hello Interns,

Keeping warm.... I really appreciate the minimalist in many of you and following my directions, but I am fine with you wearing a coat, scarf, gloves and hat into your site.  Just stow them carefully when you get to site and keep them out of the way.

Final request - points are at stake!  I noticed Friday and today a few interns with hair don'ts - strays hanging down.  Keep a "kit" with you in your car and do your hair before you go in, not after.
Once again... do you have a hair "do" or a hair "don't" at site?

Arielle and Madison - Keep me informed of site info this week as requested.

Let's have a talk about sense of entitlement and communication breakdowns on Wednesday.  How can these sabotage your internship and potentially get you dropped from the program?  This is serious business.  Have you written about this in your journal?  Have you heard about or seen behaviors that are not consistent with professionalism?  We'll use our professionalism rubric during this discussion.

Due Wednesday:

1. Time sheet for 12/4 to 12/8
2. Training plan - REMEMBER to ask me if you need help.  Don't show up empty handed.
3. Research assignment on a bio-ethical issue
4. A big smile and a "good morning or good afternoon for me!
5. Ideas for holiday card, candy or gift for your site/staff.  Something simple, but meaningful.
Let's show them how much they mean to us.

GHS Modified Schedule for THURSDAY, 12/21/17:

Thursday, December 21
Period 1 8:00 - 8:55
Period 2 9:05 - 10:00
Period 3 10:10 - 11:10
Lunch 11:10 - 11:50
Period 4 11:50 - 12:45
Period 5 12:55 - 1:50

Keep checking the blog!!

Happy Thursday!

Hello All,

Hey interns- Keep working on your appearance, attitudes and initiative.  By the way, do you have a hair "do" or a hair "don't" at site?  Be sure to keep that hair back and look gorgeous...which isn't tough at all for you!

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Hello Interns,

First of all, The Good.  I am very proud of you.  When there are little or no issues during the first week, that means you are being the best intern you can be and following directions, completing your time sheet (and getting it to me on time) and communicating with me on all relevant issues.  GREAT JOB!  KEEP IT UP!

The Bad. Reminder.....ladies, take your hairspray, pins, headbands and put them in your car - fix your hair before walking into site. Make sure hair is combed back, no loose hair and use bobby pins or barrettes if necessary.  Be the role model I know you can be.  Points are taken away for concerns with appearance, attitude, initiative, etc.

Ugly?  Not this week. Let's keep it that way!

Experience in the field - "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" - I want stories from the field every Wednesday.  Share stories from your journal so we can all benefit.

As we continue our discussion on HIPAA and Legal/Ethical Issues, complete the following for HW.  Please bring to class on 12/13:

A print out regarding research, a case study and any current or pending legislation on one of the following controversial issues:

1. Euthanasia (assisted suicide - humans) or when applied to animals

2. Surrogacy

3. Cloning

For next week 12/13/17:

1. Controversial issue printouts. Prepare for discussion - highlight areas of interest/opinion
2. Time sheet for the week of 12/4 to 12/8  20 points each
3. Training plan due (please....do not hesitate to show me your draft or ask for help!!!)  100 points
Use your professionalism rubric and the HIPAA Cheat Sheet to add items to your training plan.

Keep checking the blog!

Happy Monday to All!

Hello Everyone,

Week 2 has begun!

I am still visiting sites, so hang in there!  I only have a few more before I can say I've stopped in to see all of you.

There are only two things that need attention for right now regarding site:

1. Ladies, be sure to take some hairspray, headband, barrettes, hair tie, etc.  No "wispies" please!
Achieve that polished look by keeping hair away from your face.

2. I have witnessed a few people leaving site early. Expect to be at site a minimum of 2 hours per day. If that changes for any reason, call me so I can note your attendance.  All of this must be reflected on your time sheet accurately.

KAISER STUDENTS:  Your IT/Computer training will be on Friday 12/8 and Monday 12/11.  Pleasanton folks will report to Livermore for the training. I'll have details tomorrow or on Wednesday for you.  If all goes well, none of you will need a permission slip, but will go during your normal site hours.  Asia, Kennedy, Angel, Melia, Pranavi and Jane - Let's be sure I have a hard copy of your PPD results for my student records binder - Even if you've given me a copy, we'll double check for all of you.

Please read over last week's blog entries and check again tomorrow too.  Be prepared for 12/6!

Ms. Erceg

Week One, Done.

Hello Interns,

Week one is done and week two will be even better!  Now that you are familiarizing yourself with your site and how it operates, next week will be easier.

Pranavi, Kennedy, Asia and Jane:

Please bring me two copies of your PPD results.  I will need to turn those in at Kaiser and keep a copy here for my records.  I have Melia's and Angel's.

REMINDERS:

1. Time sheet signed and turned in.  DO NOT come to class without it. Contact me if you need help!

2. Make sure your journal is very well written and meets the criteria.  Bullet points are fine, but be
very thorough.  I must see the criteria met as well as medical terminology used/observed.

3. Give your supervisor/staff the EMERGENCY CONTACT FORM.  Some supervisors told me
they have not seen it.  It's the one that I have, one for parent, site and one for your binder.

4. Collect business cards if available (3).

5. Review your schedule with your supervisor/staff to ensure that we are all on the same page.

6. It is not acceptable to forget to contact me and your site if there will be a tardy or absence.
Let's be clear, there is a huge liability issue that we can all avoid with excellent communication.

Have a great weekend.

Ms. Erceg

Timing is Everything!

Hello Interns,

As you complete the first week, I want to congratulate you on a job well done.

I know when interns are doing well when they do the following:

3. Have time sheet signed each week on Thursday, Friday or Monday and turn it in the following Wednesday without fail! (20 points per time sheet)

KAISER STUDENTS:  I will be asking you for your hours on Wednesday 12/6.  It appears that 1:30 may be your start time for the PM class, but I'll have you confirm on Wednesday.

HOLIDAY Internship Time: I am still working on logistics.  Please stand by.
