Babies, Babies and more Babies

Hi Folks,

Some of our studies this week involve conception to birth.  Remember to bring in your questions or put one in the ? envelope on my cabinet so I can address it with the class.

Question of the Day:   (This is an FYI)  Thanks Lauren, this hopefully answers the question.

Can testicular cancer be detected by a male urinating on a pregancy test/reagent strip?
According to the American Cancer Society, pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone called Beta-HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). Beta-HCG is produced by the cells of a woman's placenta during pregnancy, but is also excreted by some tumors "including some, but not all, testicular cancers," the cancer society says.
"At the time of diagnosis, only a small minority of men with testicular cancer have HCG levels high enough to be detected by a home urine pregnancy test," says Dr. Ted Gansler, director of medical content for the American Cancer Society, in a statement. "More sensitive blood tests for HCG with a lower cutoff level could detect a somewhat higher percentage, but several non-cancerous conditions can cause false positive results. "Current evidence does not indicate that screening the general population of men with a urine test for HCG (or with urine or blood tests for any other tumor marker) can find testicular cancer early enough to reduce testicular cancer death rates".

Anticipating the Need

Hi Everyone,

That's what scheduling is all about - ancipating the need! By the way, don't forget all of the customer service/patient service we provide at the highest level now at our jobs and during our internship.

As we delve further into the world of scheduling, the service element continues to infiltrate the process, doesn't it?  We must anticipate the needs of the doctor, facility and patient.  We'll talk tomorrow about different types of scheduling systems and how they apply to different types of offices.

I have started to look over your scenarios and real-life stories of customer service challenges.  I am seeing a lot of great GAA responses instead of the negative reactive behaviors.  Good job!!!

Regarding cranberry juice and its effects on UTI's:

http://www.umassd.edu/chrc/cranberriesandhealth/

Homework:

Work on your flashcards to ensure you have the combining forms down for the digestive, urinary and reproductive system for both female and male.  Study these in your MT book.

Flashcard Frenzy Friday on 10/27.  Bring in your flashcards!!!

Keenan online assignments due Monday 10/30, but I prefer Friday 10/27.
IMPORTANT:  Anticipate the need of your teacher and your grade! Do not hesitate to come see me about any concerns you have in completing the assignments!

Go Med Occs!!!

Blog....what blog?

Hi Everyone,

I admit it....I rushed out for an appointment yesterday and did not post to the blog.  Thank you all for checking it anyway.

Homework:

Please write down a scenario or real-life event in which an angry patient/client/customer is angry or upset and how you calm them nicely and assure them that you will do all you can to help.
Be specific and detailed (one paragraph).

Study the MT on digestive, urinary and reproductive systems.

As we approach our next body system, the reproductive system, please know questions come up.

If you have a question that involves sex and/or the reproductive system, please write it down on a piece of paper and don't write your name on it.  Type it up if you'd like.  I will have an envelope in the classroom and I will address each one by saying "A student wants to know.....".  This way, I can prepare for discussion.  (If the question is not read out loud to the class, you'll have to come see me - some questions cannot be answered in an open forum).

KEENAN ONLINE PROBLEMS?

The rep said to try Chrome or Firefox (switch browers and try again).

See you tomorrow.

Have a Great Weekend!

Hello All,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Lisette and Emma!  We'll tell you again on Monday.  Have a lot of fun.

Thank you Bella A. for presenting on your health concerns and management.  You are truly an expert in self-advocacy.  Show this to mom...I am very proud of you and the students appreciated everything you talked about.  It took a lot to share all of that and for that, I thank you.

No homework, but here's a thought...

Pack up some healthy, nutritious foods in containers or baggies on Sunday and set yourself up for a very nutritious, energy-packed week!  Cook meals in advance as well so you can reheat or "reinvent".

You all have awesome new shirts now, so wear them proudly and brag about Medical Occupations. You have earned bragging rights! I am so happy you are all in the class. Keep up the good work...and good attitudes!

Take care and see you Monday.

Hope you had a "GAS" today

Hello Everyone,

I'm glad you all have a sense of humor...my special assistants, Jillian, Jori and Asia, did a great job with sound effects today. Flatulence can be funny!  It also indicates that our digestive system is working.

How about my digestive system joke.....

Have you heard about the movie called "Constipation"? ..............it never came outHA HA HA

We have Med Occs shirts now. Thanks again Lidia.  The shirts are great!  The morning class will get their shirts tomorrow.

Homework:

Bring in your 5-day food/nutrition plan and a therapeutic diet printed out from the internet for a family member or friend.

See you tomorrow and we'll swallow the rest of the digestive system and talk more about the importance of confidentiality and medical records.  I know...keep your excitement level under control. :-)

Have a great evening.

For a family member or friend.....help them with a therapeutic diet for the condition(s) they are managing. Look up online the best foods/diet that are recommended.

FYI:

Metabolism: Term that is used to describe all chemical reactions involved in maintaining the living state of the cells and the organism in order to maintain life.

By the way here is BMR defined:

Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is an estimate of how many calories you'd burn if you were to do nothing but rest for 24 hours. It represents the minimum amount of energy needed to keep your body functioning, including breathing and keeping your heart beating.

Just for fun:  http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/

The "baseline" metabolic rate is measured as the basal metabolic rate (BMR) for an endotherm or as the standard metabolic rate(SMR) for an ectotherm.

By the way....are you ready to turn in your Keenan Online assignments early?  Due Monday, 10/30 - no exceptions.

Lastly... Med Occs shirts should be in the classroom tomorrow or on Friday.  Hooray Lidia!  She will bring them in.

Caution....Busy Teacher on Board

Hello Everyone!

As we get closer to our goal of being super interns and prepared for internship, I need your utmost cooperation. We, the Med Occs Team, must do all we can to ensure a positive and seamless transition from full-time classroom to community classroom. The process of creating this transition is multi-layered, detailed and at times, frustrating. I'll need you to be extra cautious and communicate well, as I need your help to make this all work. Thank you from your internship coordinator/teacher.

Your site assignments, badges and uniforms will be given to you within the next few weeks.  Once you know your specialty area, you will study not only the specialty, but the facility/organization as well.  Anticipating the need is paramount to your success as an intern, and I will be your support system.  Remember, you will all be amazing, competent interns that produce an enthusiastic invite for next year's students!

Here is a study guide for next week's test:

SHIRT ORDER COMPLETE.....they arrive to us on Wednesday.  THANK YOU LIDIA and all of you that ordered.

FYI:

From our guest speaker Lauren, the MFT:

There is a crisis text line through Alameda County that students may be interested in volunteering in the future. I believe you only have to be 18 to participate. Though the training and discussion of suicide can be intense for some, this is a wonderful way to have free training and learning empathic responses in addition to building a resume.

We only need 5 more!!!

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for another enjoyable day in Med Occs.

Guess what???  If five more of you get online tonight and place your order for your Med Occs shirt, we'll have met the goal and the order can be processed!  We only have a few days left. :-(

Please...if you can - Here is the link:    https://www.customink.com/g/wyj0-00b6-4rrg

Having trouble with the W#?  I know it's been tough for a few of you.  Give me an update tomorrow:

Willow, Ashley, Armita, Kylie, Lauren, Scott, Pranavi and Christian.

Reminders:

Your assignment on 2 Home Remedies/2 Advertised "Medical Miracles" from the 10/5 blog is due this Thursday, 10/12.  Questions?  Please ask during class.

Only a few of you need your FLU SHOT....hope it's done today - today is the deadline.

You are all doing great in complying with the reduction in parking spaces.  Good thing it won't last forever!  Hang in there.

Homework:

Prepare for discussion on Chapter 7 in your MT book as well as showing me flashcards.  Please bring them in.  Take some notes on pathology from the chapter...which of the illnesses and conditions are unfamiliar to you?

Take a look:   http://www.ahima.org/   Print or bring in notes specifically on certification in the area of medical records management.

Thursday, October 5, 2017

Have a Great Weekend.....and...

Be sure to:

1. GET YOUR FLU SHOT....if you haven't already.  DEADLINE is MONDAY!

2. Make sure you have your flashcards done for Ch. 7 in the MT book and read the chapter.

3. MEMORIZE your SS#.  I will be keeping these confidential for the purpose of reporting volunteer SS#'s to medical facilities that require them on applications. Instead of you writing your SS# on an application, Kaiser for instance, I will report via a confidential document.  Once reported, my copy will be destroyed.

4. Assignment due 10/12: Talk to your friends, family and even your doctor about this assignment.

I'm looking for some interesting, far-fetched, outrageous "home remedies" that either work....or don't!

Your assignment:

Write down two “medical miracles” your family believes in (home remedies that are non-pharmaceutical).  Or, you can write down two remedies you have heard about or seen that are just too
good to be true..or you believe to be true. Why makes you suspicious about these?

Write or print two advertisements that promise a cure, but your are skeptical.  What is it about
the advertisements or information that lead you to believe they do not work? Is the remedy culturally based? Special recipes?

NOTE:  None of the remedies or advertised cures can be in any way sexually related.  Thank you.

DUE:  Thursday, October 12, 2017

Get some rest, enjoy your weekend and see you on Monday! NEXT POST: Monday, 10/9
