Skills to Pay the Bills

Hello Everyone,

We are starting a series of lessons on medical insurance, coding, billing and accounting.  With these skills, you can apply for a multi-faceted position in a health care environment.

Homework Due on Wednesday 3/21:     Medical Insurance (25 pts) , Values (10 pts) and Professionalism Rubric Assignment (25pts).

Print out the medical insurance coverage you currently have (from the insurance company website/log-in) and make a copy of the front and back of your insurance card that is carried in your wallet or with a parent.  Please call or go online to your current insurance company and inquire what it would cost to have coverage on your own.  Or contact a different insurance company on your own, like Blue Shield of California.

COPY/PASTE THIS LIST AND TYPE IN THE INFORMATION-

·         Laboratory services
·         Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management
·         Pediatric services
Also include:
  • Co-pays for services, ex: office visit, ER, Prescriptions, etc.
  • Amount paid to have the insurance valid (monthly or yearly premiums)
  • Deductible(s)
  • Hospitalization information (if you are admitted to a hospital, what should you expect?)
  • Diagnostic testing - what and how many tests are allowed per year, such as mammogram, laboratory, etc? Are you allowed one physical exam per year, or does the insurance company allow a CPE (complete physical exam) every two or three years?
