Correction Regarding Med Occs Shirts!

ALL STUDENTS:

Please see the blog post prior to this one for HW and Reminders.

From Lidia in the PM class:

Hi Ms. Erceg,

This is Lidia from your Med Occs PM class. This is the new link to the order form for the shirts. The price for the shirts is around $17, but in order for this price to be set, at least 30 people have to buy the shirts.

THANKS AGAIN LIDIA!!!!   :-)

Have a lot of skills? YES YOU DO!

Hello Future Medical, Dental and Veterinary Professionals!

You have acquired a lot of skills, and there are more to come!  Think about it...you are learning a new language (MT), practicing TPR BP, have knowledge of several body systems, anatomy, pathology and many careers!  In addition, we have started the important component, Administrative Medical Assisting, including patient communications.

Speaking of that...4.1 and 4.2 combined are worth 25 points and are due tomorrow, 9/30.

Please review the handout "Procedure 4.1 - Communicating with the Anxious Patient" and come in tomorrow ready to turn in attached notes (handwritten neatly or typed and stapled to the handout) of this very specific scenario about why the patients is anxious.  Turn in tomorrow.

Example: Patient has come in today to talk about a scheduled surgical procedure.

Answer these questions with full sentences:

How would you prepare for this appointment?

What do you plan do say and do?

What will you say and what will you give to the patient as the appointment is complete?

"Procedure 4.2 - Identifying Community Resources"  Print out a list of community resources in your city.  Go to your browser and type in:  Community Resources _____________(the city you live in) or type in Tri-Valley.  Let's see what you bring in!  If the list is more than 3 pages, just print the first three.
Turn it in tomorrow.

Guest speaker tomorrow for the AM class, she returns Monday for the PM class.
Please...have your expense tracker ready!

THANK YOU LIDIA.....17 18 MED OCCS T-Shirts are ready to order!!!....and they are long-sleeved!  If both classes combined order 30 or more total (there are 58 of us), the cost is $15.33.  HERE's the LINK (below).  You have 14 DAYS to complete your order.  Please order tonight!  Let's get this done so I can see you wearing them....AND you can wear these under your scrub tops on cold days if the sleeves are not to long or baggy, we'll see!

Lub Dub, Lub Dub, Inspiration, Expiration

Hello Folks!

We're wrapping up the cardiovascular system this week.  Next...Chapter 6, Blood, Lymphatic and Immune Systems.

Here's what to do tonight:

1. Sit next to a family member, or your pet, and count the number of respirations without telling them you are doing it.  Be sly and don't make it obvious.  Tell me tomorrow what you counted in 15 seconds.

2. Read Chapter 5 in your MT book thoroughly.  We'll cover terminology, pathology and diagnostic procedures.  HW:  See PG. 157 and look up online:  aneurysm  What is the common etiology? (cause)

3. Keep thinking about how you can help the angry or anxious patient without being disrespectful. How do you help a patient feel welcome, comfortable, heard?
We'll have a great discussion about that tomorrow.

4. ALL flu shots must be done by MONDAY, 10/9/17. You can get it tomorrow as well!
Make a plan tonight with your parent(s) on how to make that happen.  Leave a vm with your doctor's office, call CVS, Walgreens or a Safeway store that has a pharmacy.  Ensure they are ready for you, their hours and the best time to show up for your flu shot!

5. LHS:  Somebody please go see Ms. Cabading in the Career Center and get an LHS logo for our wall!

6. W# trouble?  Have your CCCID#?  Let's look at the website together.  See me before or after class.

Have a nice evening.

Ms. Erceg

p.s. Abbreviations!

 Rx for me:

Sig:  ii cups coffee po qam and H20 qid to counteract diuretic effects of caffeine.

Keep Practicing Vital Signs!

Hello All,

Many of you made your first attempt at taking a blood pressure today and you did very well.  Don't worry if you could not detect sound(s).  We'll keep practicing. Thank you to my helpers who are veterans at taking a BP.

With practice, your will complete TPR and BP with ease.  At some point, you will be able to take a pulse and respiration count at the same time!  Try this at home on a family member.  Psssst....don't tell them you are counting respirations!

Homework:

1. For tomorrow, please bring in your flashcards again and complete cards on the terms on page 138 and 151 in your MT book.

Review Appendix III Abbreviations in the MT book.  How about this?  What does this mean? Be ready if I ask you.

Ranitidine, 150 mg. i cap po @ hs for 7d.

What is Ranitidine?  Is there an OTC name for it?

2. THANK YOU to those who brought in their W#.  PLEASE, if you have not....do so tomorrow.  Trouble?  Come see me after you have checked the instructions on the blog.

3. Keenan online..keep working on these.

4. Keep tracking those expenses!!!

5. Try pulse and/or respiration counts.

See you tomorrow.

Ms. Erceg

Do you have your fingers on the pulse of life?

Hi All,

Take a family member's pulse tonight and practice approaching the patient gently, graciously and professionally.  Introduce yourself and get permission to proceed.

We learned today about what may be of concern if the patient has an abnormal pulse rate or rhythm.

Reminders and Homework:

10/2.  I walked right into CVS and got mine on Saturday.  Call first!!!  Make sure they are
    ready for you!

2. Wear a short-sleeve shirt tomorrow so we can start practicing blood pressures.

3. Keep tracking your expenses and add in the family expenses too on your tracking sheet.  Do this
daily and be ready for our guest speaker on finance Thursday.

Here are 10 budgeting apps for college-bound teens.  Try one and attach a print out to your tracking sheet.

Ready for Another Nice Guest Speaker?

Hello Everyone,

Stacey Ballard, a liver recipient, will be in class to talk to us about her experience and how many "anniversaries" there have been since the transplant.  Review the website:  donornetworkwest.org and write down a few questions for her!

REMINDERS:

GHS students:  Here is the link for the El Aviso for today.  PLEASE view it, as I don't want to be responsible for you not having your school information!!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1FG271SwIA&t=1s             Numeral 1's are in yellow.

HOMEWORK:

1. Gather up the flashcards you've made and the CH. 1 worksheet.  It's time for....
FLASHCARD FRENZY FRIDAY!!!  Don't be caught without your flashcards!

2.  Review your test and highlight any concerns and turn it in to me for review tomorrow.

3.  Please imagine what your Inner Critic looks like.  Draw a picture of him/her/it.  On the same piece of paper, front or back, please imagine and draw what your Inner Guide looks like.  Draw a picture of him/her/it.   Your inner guide tells you to say...."I am enough", "I am fierce" and "I matter."

I can't wait to see these!  You may use a photo or image from an online source as well.....just make sure to check that it is appropriate before turning it in to me.  Choose images that really communicate the judgmental inner voice and the inner encouraging voice.

Never text while driving....even if you think it is safe!  The new IOS has a function and there are these:

 CHECK IT OUT:

https://lifesaver-app.com/

https://www.honkforhelp.com/explore/2016/5-free-apps-to-prevent-texting-while-driving/

Stay safe and I'll see you tomorrow!

accordingly. (GHS Blood Drive)  For the test: study your MT book:  Pages 50, 84 and 111.

Career Talk

Hello All,

Being a career specialist, I look forward to helping you with career choices and eventually, the right training program, 2 or 4 year college that will help you reach your goals!

You looked at a lot of careers today.  Take your time, do your career research and complete your fantastic internship adventure.  You'll know your pathway, or at least get a very good start.

Try these tonight...

https://www.bls.gov/ooh/

Reminders:

1. W#'s - I know many of you are having trouble.  I will keep working with you and getting advice
from LPC on how to get everyone taken care of.  Please keep trying.

2. Review MT Chapters 4 and now....5.  Cardiovascular system is next - that is Chapter 5.

3.  One more travel form to collect....you know who you are!

4.  Regarding Keenan... I believe it was Grace that asked about "MSDS" - that is a Material Safety          Data Sheet that describes a product that can be dangerous and how to administer first aid or
how to clean up the product safely.

5.  For those interested in becoming a CCMA, a California Certified Medical Assistant, go to:

     http://www.cmaa-ca.org/     California Medical Assistants Association

See you tomorrow for more fun in Medical Occupations ROP !

Hello You Fabulous Students!

Dear Students,

Good talk about muscles today.  I appreciate you breathing deeply and stretching today.  Try it at bedtime and when you wake up in the morning.  Set your intention for the day, perhaps something like this...."Today is going to be a GREAT day"!  Set the tone and even if there are a few bumps to get over during the day, know that you'll be better prepared if you started the day right.  That's what healthcare workers must do daily to be on their game for every patient they see!

Tomorrow, I will give you instructions on registering at LPC and getting your CCID or "W" number. This allows ROP to transfer college credit to you via our local community college.  This makes you a college student while still in High School. 😀 This is a requirement for all students, even if you never physically attend LPC (which I hope you do!)

Interested in getting college (or a lot of it) paid for?  Go to scholarships.com and let me know what you find.  You will be surprised about how much money you are eligible to receive!

Reminders:

For those given Traveler Forms today, please bring them in tomorrow. No physician signature required at this time. Already turned yours in?  No worries.

Review pages 111 to 126 of CH. 4, Section II for our work on muscles tomorrow.  If you have that completed, you may look ahead to the cardiovascular system in CH. 5 for a brief review.

Flu Shots - No later than October 1st.  For some of you not waiting on Kaiser, please do it this week.

No perfume or cologne allowed at site, and not in the classroom please.  I am very sensitive to those strong scents and get headaches, aka: cephalgia.

Keep up your Keenan assignments.  October 30th only seems like it's far away.  At this point, if you have not started, plan at least 4 to 5 modules per week.  Remember to print out a certificate of completion for every module!

Asia - We still want to hear your story about a diagnosis!  Sorry about getting sidetracked.

I'm sorry, I made a mistake, I'll make it better.  The guest speaker schedule for tomorrow is actually set up for October 12, not tomorrow.  I made it better by noting it on the board.

Take good care of yourself.  Good nutrition, good sleep and of course, deep breathing and stretching!

Ms. Erceg

Happy Friday!

Hello Everyone,

We had a talk today about internship placement today and thank you for being receptive to the rule...."No Sense of Entitlement."  Please know that it will all work out and that your trust in me is paramount to the success of the program. I have your preferences and I will do all I can to create a wonderful internship experience for you.  Your answer to your internship assignment...."Thank you, I will go out into the field do a good job for you and make you and Ms. Schreiber proud.....I won't let you down."

Just so you know.... if you are going to be ABSENT or LATE, I must be contacted in advance of the start of class...the sooner the better.  Do not be a NO CALL/NO SHOW in this class!  If there was a true emergency, exceptions may be made, but all others - don't count on it.  Med Occs folks are never absent or late....are they????  Ms. Schreiber says....be here every day!

We are going to practice s t r e t c h i n g on Monday.  Strength and flexibility are our muscles favorite friends.  Bring in your ideas about how to stretch safely and effectively.  Share what you know!

Granada High Students....COIN WARS starts on Monday.  This is a great fundraising effort and I'll explain the rules on Monday.  For now, know that coins count for positive points, paper for negative points and paper money can potentially sabotage other classroom's efforts!

Review in your MT book, Chapter 4 - Section One and Section Two.  (Emphasis on muscles)

Pioneer in Medical History -  Draft due on Monday, 9/11.

Have Pets? Something newsworthy....be careful about your pets eating human food.  Some of it contains Xylitol, a sugar substitute that animals cannot process.  Their liver fails and leads to death.  Give pets...pet food.  Most all human food is bad for them.  All you animal lovers and future veterinary folks know this, right?

Take care and have a great weekend.

Skeletal System Tomorrow....and Introducing...The Muscular System!

Hello You Fabulous People You!

How exciting!  Our lively discussions on body systems are fun and your questions and comments are welcome.  Stay engaged as we explore the body systems.

Factoid for you...Babies have more bones than adults because as they grow up, some of the bones fuse together to form one bone. This is because babies have more cartilage than bone. Newborn babies have around 305 bones. A baby's skeleton is mostly made up of cartilage. As a person grows up, most of this cartilage turns into bone in a process called ossification. By adulthood, the skeleton has just 206 bones.   (KNOW THIS TOMORROW AND I WILL BE IMPRESSED!!)

Regarding muscles...... What does R I C E mean?  I'll tell you... Rest Ice Compression Elevation.
That's the answer for a number of ailments!

For tonight:

1. Set up an appointment for your flu shot.  Call and leave a vm for your doctor, call Target, etc. IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO EGGS....you may not be eligible for the flu shot.  Let me know.

2. Review in your MT book, Chapter 4 - Section One and Section Two.  Be ready to talk about both sections tomorrow.  We'll also practice identifying bones on the skeleton.

3. How about that Pioneer in Medical History?  Draft due on Monday, 9/11.

Hey PARENTS.......   How lovely it was to meet you last night!  Please contact me as needed - I would love to talk to you.

Our wish list includes medical supplies and equipment, so please contact me with anything you have that would be helpful in the classroom.

See you tomorrow everyone!

So Much In Two Weeks!

Dear Students,

I want you all to know that without your commitment, cooperation, honesty, hard work and being humble....Med Occs would not have been off to such a great start.

Don't let us down....keep up the good work.  Ms. Schrieber is counting on us to be the best that we can be!

There will be a test on body planes and directional terms Thurs. 9/7...hmmm....studystack.com????

Work on your flashcards....some of you are way ahead of the game and have a lot done.  Woo Hoo!

Here is what to have ready for Tuesday, 9/5:

1. Three consecutive pulse rates for three days, before you get out of bed. We'll compare that average to your pulse we take in class.  Really do it.  Be honest.  Write them down.

2.  Ask a family member or good friend to listen to your 10 goals, some information from your Life Balance Worksheet and review a few of the suggestions provided.  They may get help too and you can do some of the items on the suggestion sheet together for support.  On TUESDAY, bring in the Self Care Suggestion Sheet, the Life Balance worksheet and the 10 goals. (some of you had to write/finish your 10 goals...do it!)  Print your Learning Style Inventory and bring it in Tuesday as well.  See previous blog for link.

3.  Let me know if you have at least one of the Keenan online assignments done and don't forget....PRINT the certificate of completion at the end of each one!  Keep them in chronological order in a folder and turn them all in 10/30 clipped with a binder clip (no three hole punch or staple). Include the assignment sheet, filled out.  They will be proudly displayed in your portfolio.

4.  I have a "Family Agenda" at the bottom of this blog.  Try it out and take charge of building on your relationships with meaningful dialogue during the meeting.  A lot of you have the goal of enhancing your family relationships.  Everyone gets a voice and don't forget to rotate leadership!

5. Hey Brittany!  You are the "Keeper of the Folder" for Bullard Uniform.  Since you and your group are headed there on Tuesday, please give it to them at the shop.  THANK YOU!

Take care and have a GREAT weekend.
